In 1889, Arnoud Baron van Brienen had five holes built on a sheep pasture on his Clingendael estate as a gift to his 18-year-old daughter Daisy van Brienen. This very first golf course in the Netherlands was built by Scottish teaching pro John Duncan Dunn.
